Monday, washing day, after the clothes were hung out to dry, the back fence was a good place to have a yarn with your next-door neighbour. It's not known if it was on a Monday, but that's where, years ago two ladies talked about the fact that there was no Presbyterian Church in Geebung. They decided to do something about it. They contacted the church office and it's from there that it all began. A meeting was held on the 19 th Sept 1960. Many people became involved and after lots of discussions it was decided to purchase the high Queenslander on the corner of Simla Avenue & Mayflower Street. On Sunday 5th February 1961 the first Church Service and Sunday school was held in the old farmhouse. The minister was the Rev A M Wylie who was also the minister at Wavell Heights. Junior Fellow, ship was held in the double garage of a home on the corner of Mayflower Street and Ellison Road.
The old farmhouse served well for 2 1/2 years. Plans were then made to erect a hall on this same site. Funds were raised by running fetes, cake stalls, and concerts. The cooking and icing of the sponge cakes was done on Friday nights to be sold on Saturday mornings at street stalls near Chermside Shoppping Centre and Geebung Railway Parade.
The hall was opened in 'May 1963.
This hall was a multi function building and served as our place of worship until 1983 when our present church building was completed. This Presbyterian Church continued until the inauguration of the Uniting Church in Australia in June 1977.
February- 2001, the year the Geebung Church celebrated it's 40th Anniversary. A booklet was produced by Ian Caitens for this occasion, telling the story of the Geebung Church.
Over these 40 years, people remember going there for Sunday school for the first time, being married there or having their child or children baptised.
We thank the two ladies who had started the ball rolling more then 40 years ago while having a yarn over she back fence. God bless them.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Geebung Council of Elders seeks to build up this congregation by loving and supporting its members in times of joy and in times of trial. We will seek to do this by visitation, by participating in the leading of worship and in the spiritual oversight of the people. We will endeavour to ensure that the gospel of Jesus Christ is brought to the people and that the gospel of Jesus Christ is fostered within their lives.
GOALS
To build up the congregation in faith, and love, sustaining its members in hope, and leading them into closer relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord.
